Just like Jeffrey Bernard – or perhaps nothing like that inveterate hell raiser and Spectator columnist who drank himself so grandly to death – Despina Adgemis is unwell.
So unwell in fact is the sister of low lying bankrupt-about-town Jon Adgemis that she was unable to attend the Federal Court yesterday to be examined by lawyers acting for the liquidators probing her brother’s infernally complex corporate affairs.
Nor the court heard was Ms Adgemis well enough to attend today, or even well enough to convey the news herself.
That fell to her lawyers at Hamilton Locke, which joins the swelling cohort of legal advisors attached to the Adgemis teat, though where Adgemis is finding the milk to keep their trust accounts filled is a mystery, one that his bankruptcy trustee Andrew Yeo needs to solve if creditors are to see any return.
According to counsel for the liquidators Michael Rose his instructors at ERA Legal received an email at 9:21am yesterday advising that Ms Adgemis, who was served with a summons for examination on June 21, was unable to attend.
Rose said Hamilton Locke’s correspondence intimated that the summons had not been validly served – which Rose said was disputed – and that a medial certificate was included with the correspondence, along with a letter from a doctor dated March 22, 2025. ‘Tis a long time to be unwell.
Rose pointed out that the proper way for Ms Adgemis to seek to be excused from complying with an examination summons was to make an application supported by evidence.
As that wasn’t done it was not surprising when Rose mentioned that depending on Ms Adgemis’s next moves his clients had the option of seeking a bench warrant for her arrest, which might be just the tonic an unwell examinee needs.
